Germany suffered a reality check in New Jersey despite already securing their place in the knockout stages as Group E winners. Julian Nagelsmann's side were stunned 2-1 by a resilient Ecuador team in their final group match.
Leroy Sane gave Germany an early lead, but Ecuador fought back through Nilson Angulo before Gonzalo Plata secured the win with a late goal. The performance left television analyst Jurgen Klopp deeply concerned about the team's direction.
We chose the wrong methods on this pitch; we played the wrong kind of football against an aggressive opponent. From the 12th minute onwards, we had no depth to our game, and we defended in a low block as if we just wanted to test it out. Jurgen Klopp
Klopp insisted that the team's mentality was lacking, warning that such a performance would not suffice in the upcoming rounds. Forward Deniz Undav echoed these concerns, admitting that the South American underdogs simply wanted the win more than the German squad.
Germany must now quickly recalibrate their tactical framework before their round of 32 clash in Boston next Monday. With defensive vulnerabilities exposed, the team faces an immediate threat to their tournament aspirations if they fail to regain their structural discipline.
