Viking captain Zlatko Tripic was at the heart of the drama during Tuesday's 3-3 Champions League thriller against Bayern Munich. The Norwegian skipper later admitted that his aggressive tactical approach was designed to unsettle the visitors, which ultimately resulted in a red card for Bayern's Michael Olise.
Olise was sent off in the 73rd minute after receiving two quick yellow cards, the second for throwing the ball directly at Tripic. Beyond his role in the controversy, Tripic was instrumental in the match, providing assists for both Gianni Stensness and Herman Haugen.
The Bavarian giants were left furious by the host's psychological tactics. Bayern sporting director Max Eberl did not mince his words after the match:
He [Tripic] played like a bastard on the pitch. He wanted to win the match and we let ourselves get provoked. He got exactly what he wanted.
Harry Kane also weighed in on the incident, labeling Tripic a player who enjoys winning fouls and wasting time. Undeterred by the criticism, the Viking captain stood by his actions, acknowledging that the gap in quality necessitated a cynical approach to remain competitive. He noted that he did not even dare to enter the Bayern dressing room to ask for a jersey after the game.
Viking head coach Bjarte Lunde Aarsheim praised his captain's leadership, stating that Tripic's fearless attitude and ability to get under the skin of world-class opponents provided a vital energy boost to the entire squad. The club's medical team is currently monitoring Tripic, who suffered a rib injury during the physical contest.
