UEFA has launched a formal investigation into an alleged incident during the Republic of Ireland’s 1-1 Nations League draw against Israel. The match, which took place behind closed doors in Backa Topola, Serbia, has become the subject of disciplinary scrutiny after reports surfaced regarding conduct in the tunnel at half-time.

An Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to review official match reports and determine whether misconduct occurred. The governing body confirmed that the inspector will evaluate evidence surrounding claims that Israeli players spat towards an Irish coach during the interval.

Following a review of the official reports which contained an allegation of an incident in or around the tunnel at halftime, an UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to conduct the appropriate disciplinary investigation regarding potential misconducts from player(s) on the occasion of the UEFA Nations League 2027 league phase match between Republic of Ireland and Israel. The Israel Football Association has rejected the accusations, stating that no member of their squad acted unprofessionally. They claimed that the allegations were unfounded and noted that they had maintained a sporting approach despite what they described as provocations from the Irish side.

This incident follows a period of significant tension between the two nations, both on and off the pitch. Previous fixtures have been marked by political friction, including the withdrawal of Irish goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu and heated pre-match rhetoric from Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson. The Football Association of Ireland had previously requested that UEFA avoid pairing the two teams in future competitions, a request that was denied by the governing body.
