Thomas Tuchel breaks silence on potential Mexico clash in Round of 16
England manager Thomas Tuchel addressed potential future match-ups after securing top spot in the group stage at the 2026 World Cup.
England secured top spot in Group L following a solid 2-0 victory over Panama at New York Stadium. Goals from Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham ensured the Three Lions advanced to the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup as group winners.
Despite the win, Thomas Tuchel was questioned about a possible showdown against Mexico in the Round of 16. The German manager opted to remain cautious, emphasizing that the team cannot afford to look past their upcoming Round of 32 fixture against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
"It is possible, but there is a match before that. We can only focus on one match, and that is the next one. If we get carried away and start talking and thinking about a possible Round of 16, we will regret it. We have a very difficult match in four days," stated Thomas Tuchel.
For the highly anticipated matchup to happen, Mexico must first overcome Ecuador in their own Round of 32 clash. Only a win for the team managed by Javier Aguirre would keep the possibility of a duel against England at the Estadio Azteca alive.
