Spain vs Portugal: The most valuable Round of 16 clash
Spain and Portugal meet in the World Cup Round of 16 in the tournament's most valuable match, with combined squad values exceeding €2.2 billion.
On Monday, July 6, the World Cup hosts a clash dubbed the "billion-euro duel." Spain and Portugal face off in the Round of 16, marking their third meeting in World Cup history. This match stands as the most financially valuable encounter of the tournament so far, with the combined market value of both squads reaching €2.23 billion.
Spain, led by young star Lamine Yamal, holds the higher squad valuation at €1.22 billion. Yamal himself is one of the world's most expensive players, valued at €200 million. Portugal, despite a slightly lower financial valuation of €1.01 billion, remains among the four most expensive teams in the competition, trailing only France, England, and Spain.
The match is notable for featuring five of the top 10 most valuable players on the planet. Alongside Lamine Yamal, the lineup includes Spanish stars Pedri (€150 million) and Fermín López (€100 million), as well as Portuguese talents Vitinha and João Neves, both valued at €140 million.
Historically, Spain holds the upper hand with 17 victories compared to Portugal's six. In their two previous World Cup meetings, Spain won 1-0 in 2010, while the 2018 encounter ended in a dramatic 3-3 draw.
