Former Manchester City and Al-Ahli winger Riyad Mahrez is set for a surprise move to the Qatar Stars League. The 35-year-old has reached an agreement in principle to join Al-Shamal, according to reports.
The deal is structured as an initial one-year contract, which includes an option for an additional season. Mahrez is expected to travel to Qatar early next week to undergo medical assessments and finalise the paperwork.
Despite receiving interest from clubs in England, MLS, and local rivals, Mahrez opted for the project at Al-Shamal. The decision was driven by the club's ambition to compete in the AFC Champions League Elite and the promise of a central role for the Algerian veteran.
At his new club, Mahrez will reunite with long-time international teammate Baghdad Bounedjah. The pair are expected to form a formidable attacking partnership for the side that finished as runners-up in the league last season.
Mahrez arrives with a decorated resume, having recorded 37 goals and 46 assists in 122 appearances for Al-Ahli, while also securing back-to-back AFC Champions League titles.
