Richard Hughes steps down as Liverpool sporting director

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes has officially stepped down from his role. He is expected to join Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal in the near future.

Hughes arrived at Anfield in June 2024, moving from a similar position at Bournemouth. Although his contract was set to run until 2027, his departure was considered likely. During his time at the club, he managed a transfer spend of approximately £200m, which included bringing Bradley Barcola in from Paris St-Germain.

"I'll always follow and support the club with great affection, and I wish everyone involved nothing but success for this season and beyond," said Richard Hughes in a statement.

Prior to his Liverpool tenure, Hughes was involved in high-profile deals, including the record £125m signing of Alexander Isak and the £116m acquisition of Florian Wirtz. His time at Liverpool also saw the appointment of Arne Slot as head coach, though Slot was later replaced by Andoni Iraola, a manager Hughes had previously worked with at Bournemouth.

Mike Gordon, president of Fenway Sports Group, expressed respect for Hughes' decision to seek a new challenge and thanked him for his contributions to the club's football operations and recruitment.
