Non-league side Barton Town are preparing for one of the most significant matches in their history — an FA Cup third qualifying round tie against Chorley. For the club’s supporters and players, the occasion carries deep emotional weight as they continue to honor the memory of former goalkeeper James Hitchcock, known to his friends as 'Hitchy'.
Hitchcock, a former Leeds United academy player, was killed in December 2024 following an unprovoked attack at York Railway Station. His passing left his family devastated and sent shockwaves through the tight-knit football community at Barton Town, where he was a beloved teammate.
To keep his spirit present, the club has added 'Hitchy #1' to the back of their shirts. Manager Anthony Bowsley and teammate Andy Norfolk reflect on his lasting impact, noting how his infectious laugh and humor defined his time at the club.
He is always with us. It's a beautiful thing to have on the shirt. Before each game I look at the back of the shirt and have my 10 seconds with Hitchy before I put it on. Andy Norfolk
On Saturday, Hitchcock's widow, April, and their two-year-old son, Freddie, will attend the FA Cup tie. For the family, being part of the club where James played provides a sense of connection and comfort. "I want to raise my little boy in a world where he knows about his dad," April shared.
The club maintains his legacy through various tributes, including a memorial plaque at the players' tunnel and the annual James Hitchcock Memorial Trophy played between his former clubs, Barton Town and Bridlington Town, to raise funds for victims of violent crime.
