Ray Houghton defends Emi Martinez over Aston Villa transfer push
Former Aston Villa star Ray Houghton has defended Emi Martinez's desire to leave the club, comparing his mentality to that of many South American players looking to provide for their families.

Emi Martinez remains at the center of transfer speculation as he pushes for an exit from Aston Villa before the September 1 deadline. Despite facing criticism for missing the opening game of the 2026-27 campaign and seeking to follow players like Youri Tielemans and Ezri Konsa out the door, the World Cup winner has received support from former Villans midfielder Ray Houghton.
Speaking exclusively to GOAL, Houghton explained that he does not judge players from abroad for wanting to maximize their earnings. He noted that players often have different priorities focused on securing their families' futures, which he views as entirely legitimate.

Martinez has enjoyed a decorated career, winning the World Cup and two FIFA Best awards, but he seemingly no longer views his long-term future at Villa Park. The club has already signed a replacement in Zion Suzuki, signaling that a deal could be nearing completion. Martinez is under contract until 2029, yet an exit is expected within days.
While Houghton praised Martinez as a "pivotal" character for the club, he acknowledged that there appears to be an "agenda" behind the transfer push that remains known only to the player, his agent, and the club. Meanwhile, striker Ollie Watkins has also been linked with a departure, potentially moving to Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal.
