Premier League Panel Confirms Referees' Errors in Arsenal and Manchester City Matches
An independent Premier League panel has confirmed incorrect officiating decisions in matches involving Arsenal and Manchester City.
The Premier League's key incident panel has delivered its verdict on several controversial officiating decisions from recent matches. The panel unanimously agreed that the penalty awarded against Arsenal during their match against Sunderland was incorrect. Referee John Brooks penalized defender Ezri Konsa for a hold on Dan Ballard, but experts noted the struggle was mutual, with Ballard initiating the contact that led to both players falling.
Despite admitting the referee's on-field error, the panel supported VAR Stuart Attwell's decision not to intervene, citing that the error did not qualify as a "clear and obvious" mistake. Gunners manager Mikel Arteta had previously expressed his frustration, describing the decision as "unacceptable."
Additionally, the panel ruled that Erling Haaland's winning goal for Manchester City against Manchester United should have been disallowed. The commission concluded that Enzo Fernandez was in an offside position and directly impacted the ability of the United goalkeeper and defenders to clear the ball.
