Pep Guardiola inspires NYCFC before Hudson River Derby defeat

Former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was the guest of honor for NYCFC during their Hudson River Derby clash against the New York Red Bulls. The Spanish tactician, currently on a sabbatical, visited the NYCFC locker room before kickoff to deliver a motivational speech to the squad.
Guardiola also acted as a hype man at Yankee Stadium, firing up the home fans before the match. Despite the high-profile support, Pascal Jansen’s team struggled to convert their early momentum into goals. Aiden O'Neill and Luighi both missed promising opportunities during a dominant first half.
The missed chances proved costly in the 57th minute when the Red Bulls broke the deadlock. After a defensive error from James Sands, forward Julian Hall pounced on the loose ball, rounded goalkeeper Matt Freese, and slotted into an empty net.
NYCFC pushed for an equalizer, introducing substitutes Alonso Martinez and Benie Traore, but Red Bulls goalkeeper Ethan Horvath remained firm. He denied a powerful header from Thiago Martins to secure a 1-0 victory for the visitors, leaving NYCFC to reflect on a frustrating night in the derby.
