The first half at Toronto Stadium was a tactical stalemate with very few clear-cut chances. Panama's Jose Luis Rodriguez came close with a header that struck the crossbar, but the play was whistled dead for the ball having already gone out of play.
The deadlock was finally broken in the second half by substitute Ante Budimir. In the 53rd minute, Croatia executed a brilliant team move involving Marco Pasalic and Josip Stanisic, whose precise low cross found Budimir for an easy tap-in.
Panama pushed desperately for an equalizer in the closing stages, but Dominik Livakovic stood firm, denying Amir Murillo twice to preserve the clean sheet.
With this result, Panama is mathematically eliminated from the tournament. Croatia, now on three points, looks ahead to a decisive final group match against Ghana to determine their fate in the race for the 1/16 finals.
