Noahkai Banks rejects USMNT to pledge future to Germany

Augsburg defender Noahkai Banks has officially pledged his international future to Germany, a move that comes as a significant setback for USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino. The 19-year-old had been a primary target for the American setup, which is currently looking to bolster its defensive ranks.

The German Football Federation confirmed the decision on Friday, marking the end of a long-standing recruitment battle. Alongside Karlsruher SC forward Louey Ben Farhat, Banks has agreed to a designated pathway within the German national team system.

Born in Hawaii to an American father and a German mother, Banks has spent the vast majority of his life in Europe. He rose through the academy ranks at Augsburg and has already clocked 35 appearances for the senior side. Despite representing the US at the 2023 Under-17 World Cup and speaking positively about the USMNT environment earlier this year, the defender ultimately opted for Germany.

Because Banks previously played for the United States in a FIFA-recognised youth tournament, the process is not yet administratively complete. He must now file a one-time change of association request with FIFA. Once this routine paperwork is processed, he will be cleared to feature for Antonio Di Salvo’s Germany U-21 squad.
