Nicolo Barella has dismissed suggestions of frustration after being left out of the starting XI during Italy's recent Nations League fixtures. Despite being a cornerstone for Inter Milan, the 29-year-old was benched against Turkiye and only used as a substitute in the draw against France.
Speaking ahead of the return leg in Bologna, Barella clarified that he prioritises the collective over individual playing time. "This is a team sport, it's not tennis," he told reporters.
The midfielder also addressed the relentless nature of the modern calendar. Having earned 72 caps for the Azzurri, he admits that managing his physical load has become a priority. "I am not old, but I do have a lot of games in my legs and have had to learn how to listen to my body. Playing 70 games a year, you don't have the same sharpness you did at age 23, but statistics show I still cover the most ground," Barella explained.
He also highlighted the improved atmosphere within the squad since the return of Roberto Mancini. According to Barella, the coach has helped the players rediscover their enthusiasm following years of disappointment and heartbreak on the international stage.
Looking toward the next match against a wounded Turkiye side, Barella noted that they remain a dangerous opponent, despite being without key players like Hakan Calhanoglu. He emphasized that the team must stay wary of their opponent's desire to bounce back.
