Augsburg defender Noahkai Banks has officially committed his international future to Germany, marking a setback for the USMNT. The 19-year-old, who was born in Honolulu and holds dual nationality, had previously represented the U.S. at youth levels but never made a senior appearance for the Stars and Stripes.
USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino confirmed that Banks personally reached out to inform him of the decision. While the Argentine manager appreciated the youngster's honesty, he stressed that his squad must consist only of players who are fully dedicated to the team.
We want players with no doubt. We want players that are committed and desperate to play for the badge and play for us, and that is the most important thing. Mauricio Pochettino
Pochettino underscored that the organization of U.S. Soccer is above any individual player. He insisted that anyone joining the team must have no reservations about their choice of nation.
Following Banks' decision, Pochettino has shifted his focus to scouting domestic talent. During a recent visit to the New York derby, the coach monitored NYCFC goalkeeper Matt Freese and RBNY prospects Julian Hall and Adri Mehmeti. With these young players also eligible for other nations, U.S. Soccer is eager to secure their long-term allegiances.
