Mathis Albert becomes youngest goalscorer in USMNT history
Borussia Dortmund winger Mathis Albert broke Christian Pulisic's record as the youngest USMNT goalscorer at 17 years and 131 days old.
Mathis Albert has etched his name into the record books, becoming the youngest player to ever score for the USMNT. The Borussia Dortmund winger found the net during stoppage time in a thrilling 4-2 victory over Chile in St. Louis.
At just 17 years and 131 days old, Albert surpassed the previous record held by Christian Pulisic since 2016, when the star forward scored against Bolivia at 17 years and 253 days. Albert’s milestone came after he reacted quickest to a loose ball, firing a shot that deflected off the crossbar and over the line.
Reflecting on the integration of his younger talents, head coach Mauricio Pochettino stated:
"They're teenagers, but they are mature enough to compete. When we call these kids, we are sure that they are going to perform. It's only a matter of time."
The match was a high-intensity affair that saw the U.S. side showcase significant resilience. After trailing 2-1 following goals from Chile’s Diego Ulloa and Maximiliano Gutierrez, the Americans leveled through Julian Hall before Chris Richards restored the lead with a powerful header. Albert’s late contribution then sealed the result.
This historic moment marks the latest step in a rapid rise for the South Carolina native, who honed his skills in the LA Galaxy academy before moving to Germany in 2024. Despite the celebratory mood, the match ended in a heated confrontation between the teams, highlighting the competitive tension as the USMNT now turns its attention to upcoming fixtures against Mexico and Canada.
