Matheus Cunha rescues point for Manchester United in Fulham draw
Matheus Cunha's late strike secured a 1-1 draw for Manchester United at Fulham, following a Lisandro Martinez own goal.
Manchester United narrowly avoided another defeat, salvaging a 1-1 draw away at Craven Cottage against Fulham. The result does little to alleviate the mounting pressure on Michael Carrick following a difficult week for the club.
United looked the more dangerous side in the opening half, but were repeatedly thwarted by Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno. At the other end, stand-in goalkeeper Senne Lammens was forced into several vital interventions to deny the hosts, keeping the scoreline level as the teams headed into the break.
The deadlock was broken in the 63rd minute in unfortunate fashion for the visitors. After a strong effort from Calvin Bassey was parried by Lammens, the ball rebounded off Lisandro Martinez and trickled into his own net. The own goal turned the tide, forcing United into a frantic search for an equalizer.
Despite sustained pressure and two world-class saves from Leno to deny Bryan Mbeumo and Cunha, United finally found the net in the 89th minute. Cunha, who had been the visitors' most consistent threat, struck a deflected effort from the edge of the box that left the keeper wrong-footed.
The draw leaves United in 12th place with just five points from their opening five matches, matching their worst-ever start to a Premier League season. Fulham remain 19th in the standings, two points clear of the bottom of the table.
