Maradona's bodyguard reveals tragic details of legend's final days

Diego Maradona's bodyguard, Martín Aníbal Domínguez, has provided harrowing testimony in the trial regarding the football legend's death. Testifying in court this Tuesday, Domínguez claimed that Maradona's personal physician, Leopoldo Luque, failed to visit the star despite repeated warnings about his deteriorating health.

Domínguez, who was part of the protection team at the house where Maradona was receiving home care, stated: "He was waiting for his doctor, who never came." He added that Maradona had recently undergone surgery and was in a difficult state, often refusing to eat or leave his room.

Prosecutors presented messages in court where Domínguez repeatedly alerted Luque to severe swelling in Maradona's body. Despite these warnings, the witness testified that Luque insisted the swelling was merely a result of being bedridden and would resolve itself. Records indicate Luque visited the residence only four times in the final two weeks of Maradona's life.

An autopsy report later confirmed that Maradona died from acute pulmonary oedema caused by chronic heart failure. Forensic experts reported finding three litres of fluid in his abdomen, noting signs of generalised oedema that had developed over several days.

The trial continues, with Leopoldo Luque facing charges of involuntary manslaughter alongside several other medical professionals, including a psychiatrist, a psychologist, and nursing staff assigned to the legend's care.
