Manchester United have intensified their midfield reconstruction by submitting an opening bid for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. The offer consists of a £60m base fee with an additional £5m in potential add-ons. While it is expected that this initial approach will be rejected, talks are ongoing, and there is a growing expectation within Old Trafford that a deal will eventually be completed.
The pursuit of Baleba marks a strategic shift for United, who have been focused on refining Michael Carrick's squad ahead of the 2026/27 season. Following the earlier arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, the coaching staff identified a need for more mobility and energy in the center of the pitch—a classic box-to-box profile that was notably lacking during their recent pre-season defeat to AC Milan.
United's recruitment department has adopted a stealthier approach this summer, prioritizing Premier League-proven talent to minimize adaptation risks. This methodology, evidenced by the quick acquisitions of Santos and Tielemans, is designed to avoid the prolonged transfer sagas that hindered the club in previous years.
Though Baleba is currently sidelined with a pre-season ankle injury, the club views him as a vital component for the upcoming campaign. With the midfield structure now nearing completion, attention is expected to shift toward the remaining priority: securing a new left-back to balance the defensive line.
