Paolo Maldini has revealed that Pep Guardiola was very close to being appointed head coach of the Italy national team, according to Fabrizio Romano, citing Corriere.
«We were extremely close to appointing Pep Guardiola as the new head coach of the Italy national team,» said Paolo Maldini.
According to the Italian legend, Guardiola was prepared to accept the role under the same salary conditions as the previous coach. The Spaniard had even begun analyzing the squad and considering potential starting lineups for the Azzurri.
However, despite the initial progress, the Spanish manager decided to turn down the offer just a few days later.
