Argentina star Lionel Messi has sparked injury concerns ahead of the upcoming World Cup. During Inter Miami's Major League Soccer match against the Philadelphia Union, the 38-year-old requested a substitution in the 73rd minute after clutching the back of his left leg.
Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos later clarified that the substitution was purely precautionary. He noted that the pitch conditions in Miami were heavy due to wet weather, and the club's policy is to avoid unnecessary risks when a player shows signs of fatigue.
As far as I know, we don't have a medical report on that yet, but he really was fatigued. He was tired; the pitch was heavy and when in doubt, the standard approach is always to ensure you don't take any risks. Guillermo Hoyos
While Messi has not formally confirmed his participation in the tournament, which kicks off on 11 June, he is widely expected to make his record-equalling sixth appearance. Argentina is scheduled to announce its squad next week, ahead of their opening match against Algeria on 16 June.
