Liverpool have appointed Julian Ward as the club's new sporting director. The 45-year-old replaces Richard Hughes, who held the position for just over two years before leaving in September.
This appointment marks Ward's second stint as sporting director at Anfield, having previously held the role during the 2022-23 season. Since returning to the club in 2024 as Fenway Sports Group's technical director, he has overseen player development pathways and the academy.
FSG president Mike Gordon described Ward as the ideal candidate given his extensive experience within the industry and his deep knowledge of the club. The hierarchy believes this move will provide stability and ensure the necessary support for head coach Andoni Iraola.

During his previous tenure, Ward was instrumental in several high-profile signings, including Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Alexis Mac Allister, and Darwin Nunez. He also played a key role in negotiating Mohamed Salah's contract renewal in 2022.
Ward now faces an immediate set of priorities, including securing a long-term deal for Rio Ngumoha and determining the future of Alisson and Virgil van Dijk, both of whom have contracts expiring this summer.
