Joshua Zirkzee earns Netherlands call-up after Brian Brobbey injury

Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee has received an emergency call-up to Xavi Hernandez's Netherlands squad following a hamstring injury to Brian Brobbey. The KNVB confirmed the replacement after the striker was forced off during the Nations League draw against Germany.

Brobbey clutched his hamstring shortly after the half-hour mark at the Johan Cruyff Arena. The injury occurred during a controversial sequence where Germany continued play while Brobbey was on the ground, leading to an opening goal by Felix Nmecha.

Following the withdrawal of Donyell Malen earlier in the camp, Xavi needed reinforcements to bolster his attacking options. Despite media speculation surrounding experienced forwards like Memphis Depay or Wout Weghorst, Xavi opted for Zirkzee. The decision highlights the coach's preference for technically versatile attackers who can link up play effectively.

This call-up marks Zirkzee's first international involvement since November 2024. The striker has had a limited role at Old Trafford this season, and this opportunity offers a chance to revive his international career. He arrived at the national team camp in Zeist on Friday to undergo medical checks.

The Dutch squad is scheduled to travel to Belgrade on Saturday. Zirkzee will join the group for Sunday's encounter against Serbia, which is the first of three upcoming group matches, including a trip to Greece and a return fixture against the Serbians.
