Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martinez has expressed his belief in Italy's ability to recover from their recent international disappointments. Despite the nation missing three consecutive World Cup finals, the Spanish shot-stopper insists that the struggles stem from psychological factors rather than any decline in technical ability among the players.
Having experienced Italian football firsthand through his time in Serie A, Martinez remains optimistic about the talent available to the national side. Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, he noted:
Honestly, I see a lot of potential in Italy. They need to rediscover a defined playing model, but there's no lack of quality. For me, it's more a mental thing than a quality issue.
Italy is currently undergoing a squad rebuilding phase, aiming to establish a new playing identity under their coaching staff. The focus is on rebuilding confidence following the heartbreak of missing multiple World Cup tournaments.
Martinez’s comments come as he celebrates a personal milestone, having received a surprise call-up to the Spain national squad to replace the injured Joan Garcia. Meanwhile, the Italian national team faces a pivotal test in the Nations League against France at the Stade de France, a match they hope will serve as a turning point for their squad morale.
