Jose Mourinho has spoken out regarding the controversial incident that occurred last February during a Champions League round of 16 clash between Benfica and Real Madrid. The match was interrupted for ten minutes after the referee triggered UEFA’s anti-racism protocol following an official complaint from Vinicius Junior. European football authorities ultimately sanctioned the young Argentine forward Gianluca Prestianni for discriminatory conduct, though not for outright racism.
In an interview with Il Corriere dello Sport, the veteran manager, now four months into his tenure at the Santiago Bernabeu, addressed the intense backlash he faced at the time. Mourinho claimed the situation spiraled out of control, noting that he was targeted by public opinion and what he described as a group of 'opportunists'.
It was difficult for us because in the end Prestianni was not banned for racism. I was slaughtered by public opinion, mainly by so many opportunists, in an absolutely uncontrollable situation. Jose Mourinho
The tactician defended his decision not to intervene, citing a complete lack of verified evidence amid conflicting accounts from the players involved: "One player was saying the accusations against him weren't true and nobody had the proof. In that position, you simply cannot take a side." Despite the toxic atmosphere of the original clash, Mourinho expressed relief that both players have since moved forward.
Before embarking on an emotional reunion in Rome on Wednesday, October 14, Mourinho must first steer his side through a home test against Villarreal in La Liga matchday eight this Saturday. Securing maximum points is seen as vital for maintaining momentum before the club heads to face the Giallorossi.
