Portuguese defender Jose Fonte has announced his retirement from football after a 24-year professional career.
Portuguese central defender Jose Fonte has officially announced his retirement from professional football. His final appearance in a 24-year career came in a match between Casa Pia and Torreense.
In a farewell message, the 42-year-old reflected on his journey: "Today, game 882. The last one. Nothing was easy. Everything was earned. Thank you to everyone who helped the boy from Penafiel fulfill his biggest dream – to be a footballer."
Fonte expressed gratitude to his family, coaches, teammates, and staff members he encountered across four different countries. He also shared a special message for the fans, stating he carries them in his heart.
Throughout his career, Fonte earned 50 caps for the Portugal national team, winning Euro 2016 and the 2019 UEFA Nations League. At club level, he achieved success as a French champion with Lille and secured domestic cup titles in both England and Portugal.
