Cruz Azul head coach Joel Huiqui has set high ambitions for the team ahead of the Apertura 2026 season. The club's primary goal is not only to defend their Liga MX title but to compete for every trophy available throughout the second half of the year.
Huiqui emphasized that the focus is on consolidating the sports project while navigating a demanding calendar that features both domestic and international competitions. In addition to the league title, the team is set to contest the Leagues Cup, the Campeón de Campeones, and the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
The great challenge is to consolidate the project. We are going for 4 titles that are very important. Joel Huiqui
The manager also addressed the future of midfielder Erik Lira, who has attracted interest from European clubs following his participation in the 2026 World Cup. While no formal offer has been received, Huiqui confirmed that the club is prepared for any eventuality, noting the squad's depth and the versatility of players like Amaury García to cover potential departures.
The upcoming schedule for the reigning champions is intense. They kick off their league title defense against Atlético de San Luis, followed by a home match against Puebla and the Campeón de Campeones showdown against Toluca on July 25. International action begins in August with their Leagues Cup debut against Philadelphia Union.
