Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrimsson walks out of press conference after accusations
Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson abandoned his press conference ahead of the Nations League game against Israel following a verbal attack and accusations of racism.
Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson was forced to abandon his media duties in Backa Topola after what he described as a "verbal attack". The briefing derailed when an Israeli reporter alleged that Irish players had used racist slurs against their opponents during their previous encounter.
An Irish press officer immediately shut down the claim, labelling it completely untrue. Despite attempts to regain control of the room, the reporter persisted, leading Hallgrimsson to exit the briefing. He later conducted a separate, smaller huddle with the Irish media outside the venue.
The tension follows a highly charged first fixture, where Ireland players performed several gestures, including wearing black armbands, lowering their heads during the Israeli national anthem, and refusing to exchange pennants. Meanwhile, the Football Association of Ireland has launched an internal investigation into separate allegations that Adam Idah was subjected to racist abuse from Israeli supporters during the initial match.
Israel captain Manor Solomon issued a defiant response regarding the gestures.
If I say what I think about them, I'll probably be banned for a few games. Of course they hate us and we don't like them. I'm already looking forward to the next game against them, it's going to be completely different. Manor Solomon
Despite the intense off-field distractions, Hallgrimsson is demanding his squad remain focused on the football. The two nations are scheduled to face off in Serbia this Sunday in a match that will be played behind closed doors.
