Chelsea has successfully resolved its case regarding numerous financial breaches committed between 2009 and 2022. Despite facing 74 disciplinary charges related to secret payments to agents, the club avoided a points deduction, receiving only a £10 million fine. The decision has sparked widespread debate, particularly given the harsher penalties previously handed to other Premier League clubs.
It is important to note that the breaches were uncovered by the new ownership group, BlueCo, during an audit in 2022. The club's cooperation with investigators and its admission of guilt allowed for a significant reduction in the initial fine. Although an independent commission noted "shameful disregard for the rules," an appeals body overturned a suspended points deduction, leaving only the financial penalty.
This situation sets a significant precedent for Manchester City, which is currently facing over 115 charges for alleged financial irregularities between 2009 and 2018. Unlike the London club, City denies all allegations, and the legal process has been moving at a glacial pace.
