Gianfranco Zola returns to Italy setup in major Azzurri overhaul

The FIGC has officially appointed Gianfranco Zola as the new youth co-ordinator for the Italy national team. This move serves as the final piece of a significant administrative and technical overhaul designed to revitalise Italian football from the bottom up.
The former Chelsea and Parma icon will reunite with figures like Roberto Mancini and Claudio Ranieri, creating a formidable leadership group at the heart of the federation's new sporting project. FIGC President Giovanni Malago confirmed that the appointment aims to bridge the gap between youth ranks and the senior squad, ensuring a unified philosophy across the entire setup.

Claudio Ranieri, in his role as technical director, has already identified the need to address socio-economic barriers that have made youth academies increasingly expensive for families. The synergy between Ranieri and Zola is expected to improve scouting and developmental networks across the country, aiming to fix a system that has struggled to produce consistent talent in recent years.
Zola brings extensive international experience to the role, having managed clubs such as West Ham United, Watford, and Birmingham City in England. He will continue his current duties as vice-president of Lega Pro alongside his new responsibilities with the national team.
