Gasperini activates his 'secret weapon' ahead of Real Madrid clash
Marten de Roon, signed for Roma at Gasperini's insistence, has found his rhythm just in time for the Champions League match against Real Madrid.
Gian Piero Gasperini is once again leaning on his trusted leader, Marten de Roon. The coach, who vocally defended the midfielder during his departure from Atalanta, insisted on his transfer to AS Roma. Gasperini has dubbed the Dutch midfielder his "secret weapon," one he has managed to activate just in time for the crucial Champions League showdown against Real Madrid.
De Roon arrived at Roma late in the transfer window, as the new project in Bergamo under a different coaching staff no longer considered him part of their plans. Despite a decade-long history at the club, including 445 appearances, the player moved to reunite with Gasperini, who has previously noted that the two think exactly alike on the pitch.
Following a gradual adjustment period, De Roon started in the recent match against Como. Despite playing with ten men for 40 minutes, he proved fundamental, covering the most distance of any player—nearly 11.7 kilometers. Roma legend Aldair praised his performance, highlighting his ability to control the tempo and provide defensive stability.
This addition is vital for Roma as they look to make an impact in both Serie A and Europe. With his extensive experience in elite continental competition, De Roon brings the leadership and tactical depth necessary for the upcoming challenge against Real Madrid.
