Fulham complete record £30m deal for Shea Charles

Fulham have officially completed the signing of 22-year-old midfielder Shea Charles from Southampton. The deal is worth up to £30 million, consisting of an initial £26 million fee plus £4 million in performance-related add-ons. This move establishes Charles as the most expensive Northern Ireland player in history, surpassing the previous record held by Jamal Lewis.

The former Manchester City academy graduate has penned a five-year contract at Craven Cottage. He chose a move to west London over Leeds United to fill the void left by Sasa Lukic following his move to Ipswich Town.

Speaking to the club's official website, Charles expressed his excitement: "I'm buzzing to finally get it over the line. The club has got a really good foundation, from the bottom to the top really. It's a great club, with a really good vision – the manager explained that to me. To be here is a massive privilege."

Charles is the third signing under new manager Alvaro Arbeloa, who took charge following Marco Silva's departure to Benfica. Arbeloa is actively reshaping the squad, having also brought in Real Madrid duo Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios to build a competitive team for the new campaign.

The team is currently preparing for their upcoming schedule, including fixtures against Malaga and Stuttgart. These matches will be crucial for Arbeloa to refine his tactics before Fulham's Premier League opener against London rivals Chelsea on August 24.
