Danny Welbeck set for Chelsea medical ahead of transfer

Brighton striker Danny Welbeck is on the verge of completing a move to Chelsea. The 35-year-old has been granted permission to undergo a medical at Stamford Bridge.

Once the move is finalised, Welbeck is expected to link up with manager Xabi Alonso's squad for their pre-season tour in Hong Kong next week. He is set to sign a two-year contract with the London club.

The acquisition is part of a strategic shift at Chelsea, where the recruitment model is being adjusted to bring more experience into a squad that has relied heavily on youth for the past two seasons. Following a disappointing campaign that saw the team finish 10th without any silverware, co-owner Behdad Eghbali admitted that the club's strategy required a tweak to better challenge for major honours.

Welbeck, formerly of Manchester United and Arsenal, brings significant top-flight experience, having scored 90 goals in 400 Premier League appearances. His arrival will add depth to an attacking unit that currently contains six senior strikers, potentially leading to the departure of players like Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, or Marc Guiu on loan or permanent deals.
