Coventry City have officially announced the signing of 29-year-old Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi. The transfer fee is reported at 9 million pounds. The forward is expected to join his new teammates in the coming days to prepare for Friday's Premier League opening match against current champions Arsenal.

For Coventry, this game marks their return to the top flight after a 25-year absence. Ahead of his departure, Awoniyi received a warm send-off from Nottingham Forest, with the coaching staff and squad forming a guard of honour during their final pre-season friendly against Brest at the City Ground.

Nottingham Forest head coach Oliver Glasner praised the forward's character:

He was probably one of the nicest guys I have met, always friendly, always smiling. Everyone at the club and in the stands likes him... He always gives 100% for the team, whether he is on the pitch or on the bench. Oliver Glasner

Awoniyi, who was a record signing for Nottingham Forest in 2022, played 103 games for the club and scored 23 goals. Despite a difficult campaign last season where he struggled for starting opportunities, his recovery from a severe incident in May 2025 has been remarkable. After colliding with a goalpost in a match against Leicester, he suffered a ruptured bowel and was placed into an induced coma, from which he fully recovered.
