Chelsea FC has released an official statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the departure of head coach Enzo Maresca. The club described the 2025/26 season as a massive disappointment, citing the instability caused by coaching changes during the festive period as a primary factor in their poor performance.
According to the club, Maresca informed leadership in the autumn of 2025 that he had aspirations to eventually succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. Despite being tied to a long-term contract, the manager remained focused on the opportunity to move to the Etihad Stadium.

Chelsea confirmed that the manager's sudden exit in December 2025 left the club in a difficult position. Both the club and the manager have since reached confidential settlement agreements regarding compensation with Manchester City and Maresca himself.
