Champions League winner Sam Hutchinson continues career at non-league Farnham Town

Former Chelsea player Sam Hutchinson, who was part of the squad that won the Champions League in 2012, is continuing his playing career. The 37-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the non-league side Farnham Town.

This move marks another chapter for Hutchinson, whose career has been defined by overcoming severe adversity. In May 2025, while playing for AFC Wimbledon, the defender suffered a heart attack. After scoring a decisive goal against Grimsby, he experienced severe chest pain and was rushed to a cardiology unit in Nottingham, where he was diagnosed with 75% artery blockage and underwent surgery to install a stent.

Hutchinson's path has been challenging from the start. Forced to retire at 21 due to a chronic knee injury, he battled severe depression before successfully returning to professional football in 2011. He went on to make over 200 appearances in the Championship for Sheffield Wednesday and gained experience in the Netherlands and Cyprus.

Despite warnings from doctors about the potential need for further heart surgery, Hutchinson has been cleared to play. He currently undergoes medical check-ups every six months and serves as an advocate for the British Heart Foundation, while also working for Chelsea TV.
