Brazilian club Botafogo is celebrating the 122nd anniversary of its football foundation. This milestone provides an opportunity to revisit the unique history of how the club received its iconic name, which remains a central part of Brazilian football heritage.
The journey began in August 1904, when a group of students decided to form a new sports collective. Initially called Electro Club, the organization soon sought a name that better represented their identity. Following a suggestion from the grandmother of founder Flávio Ramos, the club was renamed to honor the Botafogo neighborhood, which was known for its natural beauty.
The club's evolution later intersected with the Club de Regatas Botafogo. In 1942, following the tragic death of Armando Albano during a basketball match between the two entities, the leadership of both organizations decided to merge. This move officially established the modern institution known as Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas.
