Bordeaux sold for one euro in rescue bid to avoid liquidation

Investment firms have purchased the struggling French club for a symbolic fee to secure its future amid a severe financial crisis.

Historic French club Bordeaux has been purchased by investment firms for a symbolic price of one euro. The deal, involving British firm Sparta Capital and American company Park Bench, aims to restructure the club and prevent total liquidation following a severe financial collapse.

Former owner Gérard Lopez, who had controlled the club since 2021, relinquished his stake and waived a 12-million-euro purchase clause to facilitate the sale. The new ownership group, including former AC Milan advisor Frank Touil, has raised 11 million euros to cover current operational costs and meet the requirements of a judicial recovery plan.

The club has suffered significantly, losing its professional status after 87 years, shutting down youth sectors, and facing exclusion from national competitions due to a 40-million-euro deficit. While the purchase offers a lifeline, the club's immediate future remains uncertain.

Bordeaux is currently awaiting a decision from the French Olympic and Sports Committee regarding an appeal against their exclusion from national leagues. Success in this appeal is crucial for the new management to begin the financial rebuilding process.

Known as a prolific talent factory, the club has launched the careers of many legends, most notably Zinedine Zidane, who played there between 1992 and 1996. Other notable alumni include Jules Koundé, Didier Deschamps, Eric Cantona, and Aurélien Tchouaméni.
