Former Manchester United and England international Ashley Young has candidly revealed the physical toll of his 23-year career. Just weeks after announcing his retirement, the 41-year-old admitted that he requires a hip replacement.
Young called time on his career this summer after helping Ipswich Town secure a historic return to the Premier League. Speaking on the High Performance Podcast, Young explained that he had been managing a serious hip injury throughout his final campaign.
I knew it was painful, but I want to make sure I do everything I can possibly do to help the team. I was told I would need a replacement, but I wasn't going to go out like that. Ashley Young
The situation escalated in January when Young suffered a setback during training. The pain eventually became so severe that he was unable to train for three months. Despite the medical advice, his determination kept him involved with the squad as they pushed for promotion.
Although he did not feature in the final match of the season, Young took pride in his role behind the scenes. His storied career includes nine successful seasons at Old Trafford, where he won the Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup, and League Cup, alongside a Serie A title with Inter Milan in 2021.
