Antoine Semenyo's Rise: From Non-League to World Cup Stage

Antoine Semenyo's path to football's elite has been far from straightforward. The forward, now preparing to face England at the World Cup with Ghana, was once on the verge of quitting the sport entirely. Following a series of rejected academy trials, he found the guidance he needed through former Forest Green Rovers manager David Hockaday.

Hockaday, who spotted Semenyo's raw talent, became a pivotal figure in his development. He did not just believe in the teenager's potential but went as far as driving him to matches at 5 am. Under Hockaday's mentorship, Semenyo adopted a mantra that would define his career: "hunger and belief."

His professional journey began at Bristol City, followed by formative loan spells at Bath City and Newport County. Competing against men in the lower divisions allowed Semenyo to develop the physicality and game intelligence that now defines his play. His standout performances at Bournemouth eventually led to a £65m move to Manchester City in January.

During the 2025-26 season, Semenyo cemented his status as a key player for the Citizens, notably scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final against Chelsea.
