Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta has reflected on his transition into professional management after taking charge of UAE second-tier outfit Gulf United. The 42-year-old, who was appointed head coach in June 2026, admitted that the mental approach required in the dugout is vastly different from his illustrious playing days.
Operating as a manager forces the former midfielder to manage a significantly higher volume of tactical variables on a weekly basis. Drawing on his vast experience at the pinnacle of world football, he aims to provide his squad with insights that go beyond traditional classroom teaching.
It's a bit more stressful than when you're a player, because while you don't try to control everything, you do have to keep far more details and scenarios in your head. But it's great. Andres Iniesta
Iniesta, who currently holds a UEFA A Licence, is preparing to complete his UEFA Pro licence this October. Addressing speculation about a potential return to the Camp Nou to manage Barcelona, the veteran playmaker noted that while it would be an appealing prospect, he is currently focused on his immediate journey.
His current priority remains guiding Gulf United toward the upper reaches of the UAE First Division League. Club officials are hopeful that his attacking philosophy can secure promotion to the UAE Pro League, providing Iniesta with a crucial litmus test before he contemplates potential opportunities in European football.
