Liverpool supporters held their breath during the latter stages of their 4-2 pre-season defeat to Leeds United in Chicago as defender Jeremie Frimpong was forced off the pitch. The wing-back, who has been a standout in summer preparations, left the field with roughly 15 minutes remaining.
Speaking to LFCTV immediately after the match, manager Andoni Iraola provided clarity on the situation, insisting the substitution was purely precautionary.
Jeremie asked for the sub; I don't think it is an injury. I think it was just an overload and I think he is not injured. In that way, I don't think we have lost anyone. Andoni Iraola
The relief regarding Frimpong is significant given the club's current injury list. The Reds are already managing the absence of Joe Gomez, who is expected to be sidelined for a month. Meanwhile, long-term recoveries continue for Giovanni Leoni and Stefan Bajcetic, while new signing Jeremy Jacquet is being integrated into the squad with extreme care.
Despite the defeat and the fitness concerns, Iraola remains positive about the progress made during the North American tour. He noted the value of testing tactical ideas against varied opposition while acknowledging the global reach of the club.
Liverpool's pre-season continues with home fixtures against Monaco and Como. The real test arrives shortly after, as the Reds travel to St James' Park to face Newcastle in their Premier League opener.
