Alexia Putellas agrees to join London City Lionesses

Two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas has reached an agreement to join London City Lionesses. The Spain international is set to embark on a new challenge in the Women's Super League after concluding a legendary 14-year tenure at Barcelona.

Despite significant interest from NWSL clubs in the United States, Putellas prioritized staying in Europe to remain close to her home country. Furthermore, the midfielder was keen to avoid signing for another continental heavyweight that would force her to compete directly against her former club.

The move is a central part of the ambitious vision held by owner Michele Kang, who aims to turn the English franchise into a consistent force in the Women's Champions League. Kang’s plans for a state-of-the-art training facility were a major draw for the player. Additionally, the club is reportedly closing in on signing defender Mapi Leon, which would reunite the pair.

Putellas leaves Catalonia as the women's team's all-time top scorer with 232 goals. She views this transfer as a way to step out of her comfort zone ahead of the 2027 World Cup and 2028 Olympic Games, aiming to replicate her elite success in the United Kingdom.
