Alex Baena in explosive form for Atletico
Atletico midfielder Alex Baena has already surpassed his output from last season, contributing to six goals in the current La Liga campaign.
Alex Baena has emerged as a vital component for Atletico Madrid this season. After a challenging previous campaign where he managed only five goal involvements in 27 league appearances, the 25-year-old midfielder has found a new level of consistency.
In eight La Liga matches this season, Baena has already recorded four goals and two assists. He has scored against Malaga, Sevilla (a brace), and Osasuna. His creative influence was also on display with assists against Villarreal and Alaves, the latter of which set up Cuti’s winning goal in Vitoria.
This resurgence is timely for Diego Simeone’s side, which has been seeking a player capable of orchestrating the attack and contributing effectively in the final third, similar to Antoine Griezmann’s role. Alongside the efforts of Kang-in Lee, Baena’s contribution has been instrumental in the team's strong start.
Having gained significant confidence as a world champion, Baena appears to have finally settled into the role the club envisioned when signing him from Villarreal. With a contract running until 2030, the midfielder is now delivering the performance levels that Simeone expects for his project.
